What is a “personal identification number”? Is repeat verification required?
A “personal identification number” is a unique identifier issued by Companies House after successful identity verification. This personal identification number is bound only to the verified individual and is not associated with any company or legal entity. If the same person serves as a director or PSC in multiple UK companies, they only need to complete verification once; the identification number obtained can then be used for filing matters relating to all relevant UK companies.

Who must undergo identity verification and apply for a personal identification number?
All directors and PSCs of UK companies must undergo identity verification and, after completion, apply to Companies House for a personal identification number. This includes: company directors; persons performing functions equivalent to those of a director; directors of overseas companies registered in the UK; and all persons with significant control.

Who is not required to undergo identity verification or apply for a personal identification number?
The following persons are exempt: persons who act only as company secretaries; natural person shareholders/members who do not hold significant control (e.g., nominee shareholders/agents, or those holding less than 25% of shares); directors who resigned before the new rules came into effect; and individuals who ceased to have significant control over a UK company before the new rules came into effect.

What specific documents are required for identity verification?
For identity verification, individuals must submit personal information and supporting documents. The personal information includes full name, date of birth, and address. Supporting documents include proof of identity and proof of address, typically: a passport with more than six months’ validity; a qualifying national identity card; a driving licence; or a utility bill, credit card statement, or bank statement issued by a government body or other authoritative institution. The documents submitted must be verifiable, traceable, and consistent throughout subsequent maintenance.

What is the official platform for identity verification?
GOV.UK One Login is the only official verification platform designated by Companies House. All individuals required to verify their identity in connection with UK companies may log in directly to this platform for verification. After completing the online verification (which is free of charge), they will be issued a personal identification number.
